Farewell To Michael Jackson, Vancouver Jazz Festival Starts With Volume Knobs Cranked.

June 27, 2009

This is going to be a short Saturday Morning News post since I have to run off to a rehearsal for my show at the Cellar tonight (which is going to be a fun show so tell a friend and come on down!) First of all, I have to mention Michael Jackson’s passing and that I’m genuinely sad that I won’t have a chance to see him in concert again. Okay, so it’d be a stretch to say his music influenced the way I play clarinet but MJ, believe it or not, was one of my earliest musical inspirations. I remember my Dad bringing home the “BAD” record when I was 10 yrs old and MAN did I love that record! Nothing made me feel like dancing like those early Michael Jackson records (in fact, that’s still true… only now you have to get a few stiff drinks in me before I’ll dance).

The latest addition to my musical family… the EWI

June 20, 2009

Because playing jazz clarinet for a living was a bit too mainstream for this lone wolf I decided to strike a slightly different path for myself,… “jazz clarinetist/EWI-ist.”

Have I piqued your curiosity yet?… I thought so.

And for all of those readers too embarrassed to admit they’re not up to speed with the latest, cutting-edge, random developments in synthesized woodwind instrument technology, EWI stands for Electronic Wind Instrument.

“Why would you do this to yourself?” you ask? “Why would you take another step further into the world of obscure modern jazz instruments?… What’s next, the Electro-Kazoo?!”

Allow me to explain: the EWI is cool. more…

A Few Words From Kahlil

June 6, 2009

No, and my whole heart isn’t in my work, and nobody’s whole heart is just in his work – your whole heart isn’t in anything – in any one thing. It is in everything … There’s just one thing our work needs – and that’s love. That’s what pupils want, what friends want, what strangers want, what an audience wants – what we all want … And that’s so easy to do – and yet we don’t do it – For I don’t mean an emotion. When I say “Love” – I mean just freedom and welcome and want and being all there with all of one’s self. Not with a philosophy and lots of ideas – that will make people say “what an interesting hour!” – but just with ourselves – the dearest thing we have – and it’s the only thing people want…
