Extra, Extra!! Big Band Concert This Monday, 1st Electroacoustic Concert On Friday, and… THE NEW ORLEANS THEME PARTY IS RETURNING TO VANCOUVER DEC. 17th/18th!!

JD_and_merry_menHello, good morning, and welcome to the Saturday Morning News Post!!

Yes, it’s been yet another extended absence of yours truly from the SMNP and yes, I know, it’s been hard on you,… it’s been difficult for me too. But this semester at McGill has unbelievably busy.

How busy is it? you ask… It’s been so busy, I haven’t even been able to keep up reading my men’s magazines. I’ve literally got a small stack of GQ’s and Esquire magazines sitting on my kitchen table,…. still in their plastic covering.

Yagh,… I know. Crazy, right?

And the madness continues. I’ve got a concert this Monday directing McGill’s Jazz Orchestra III and then,… the kicker, my 1st ever electroacoustic concert on Friday, December 3rd (at McGill, Tanna Hall).

So yes, busy, tonnes of work, and perhaps I shouldn’t even be taking the time to write this SMNP, however I know for a fact that you are all busy,… all the time, AND even more so during the Christmas season, so get out your pen and mark this event on your calendar:

JAMES DANDERFER (clarinet), CHRIS DAVIS (trumpet), RYAN ISHKANIAN (saxophones), ROD MURRAY and STEVE MYNETT (trombones), CHRIS GESTRIN (B3 organ), JOE POOLE (drums), JACK DUNCAN (percussion) James Danderfer is one of the best kept jazz secrets in Canada – Bill King Back from Montreal, James returns to bring you the New Orleans Theme Party; inspired by the hard-grooving, street-partying music of modern New Orleans brass bands. Throw in some soulful B3 organ, a clarinet, some sazeracs and a band of merry men and you’ve got THE HAPPY. As close as you’ll get to the Big Easy without leaving Vancouver!”

WHEN?… DECEMBER 17TH & 18TH, sets at 8:00pm and 9:45pm, $15 cover
WHERE?… THE CELLAR (call 604-738-1959 to reserve or click here for more info on the club)

As you can see, the band will be large and in charge (8 merry men) and featuring CHRIS GESTRIN on the soulful B3 organ. It will also be featuring a slew of new songs I penned this semester while here at McGill. SO COME ON DOWN!!

After this week is over, I will get back on the SMNP train, for real this time, and there are indeed many great things I would like to share with you all. However, for now, I must get back to work. So this is your “best kept secret” signing off until next week.

Thanks to Vincent Lim for the above photo and HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ALL MY AMERICAN FRIENDS! Have a great week! jd

MO bro, only a few more days of hairy-lipped-truth! I hope you have enjoyed this small glimpse into raw manhood, I know I have.
I wish I could be there for your electroacoustic music; I hope you record it.
Looking forward to the New Orleans throw down. Great charts, I don’t know about actually singing on stage, but for you I’ll take a leap of faith. Do you have auto-tuner software for me.

I’m not wearing a moustache for NOvember. Looking forward to NO party in a couple weeks.

“As close as you’ll get to the Big Easy without leaving Vancouver!””

But best not to EVER LEAVE VANCOUVER!!! RIGHT?

Just wait, another few months in Montreal and you’ll achieve “outsider” status, at which point any comment you may make on the local scene will be scorned as the meddlesome ramblings of someone so clueless, they …don’t even live in Vancouver! The greatest place in the Known Universe ™!

Seriously, good luck with the gig, and you seriously need to come down for a visit. Believe me, the weather here has got Montreal beat all to hell.

Ha! Exactly. It’s bold I know,… next thing you know I’ll fly down South to present “The Music of New Orleans” to the people of New Orleans!! And yes, I seriously do need to spend some time in your neck of the woods.
