Grinding Out The Hotness For July 14th show

Best-hummingbird-tattoos-for-girls-3Hello, good morning, and welcome to the Saturday Morning News Post!

Readers, as we all know, I possess tremendous amounts of blind confidence. Well,… let’s say blurred confidence.

How else could I start promoting my show before all the charts are finished? Because I believe!

JULY 14th, THE HUMMINGBIRD BRIGADE, a show you won’t want to miss!

I am in fact writing this SMNP while on a short break from writing charts. Sooo much more work to do before the band rehearses 1 week from tomorrow!

Part of the work I’m doing is ‘rearranging’ older charts to add the 3 extra band members but there’s also a LOT of fixing to do on the old charts. In a way, I suppose it’s a positive thing that my arranging skills from 2 (or even 1) year ago were considerably worse than they are now. Which is to say, I know more about composition/arranging now, thanks to my time spent at McGill. In particular, writing for big band (which I did only a few months ago) really pushed me to more carefully consider musical aspects such as range, rhythmic layering, texture, different instrument combinations, etc.. This in turn has given me SO MANY MORE THINGS TO THINK ABOUT when I write a chart.

So yeah, it’s slow going over here but I like what’s coming together so far,… hopefully the band agrees.

Gotta get back to it! Thanks for reading and have a great week everybody! jd1

“pushed me to consider musical aspects such as range…”

So more high notes for the brass?

I feel your pain, I really do, but I can’t help but crack up at the thought of a New Orleans-style band consisting of a bunch of guys staring at music stands lol.

Defeayo Marsalis has a gig every Wednesday at Snug Harbor here with his big band, the 16 piece “Uptown Orchestra.” When he started the run, about half the charts were “head charts,” the rest were written out. The last time I went down there, a couple of weeks ago, they had music stands, but not a single piece of music.

Of course, they played a LOT of blues lol.

Haha, well, it is New Orleans “inspired” but it’s (naturally) pretty different than anything I’ve heard from Nola. I’d be real interested to get your feedback on it after we record a few things
    on Thursday,…
