JD Trio w/ JOHN STETCH this Thursday: The element of surprise.

Hello, good morning, and welcome to the Saturday Morning News Post!

Readers, I have about 10 minutes to write this SMNP, so here goes.

There is a very exciting event coming up soon, 8pm this Thursday in fact at Pat’s Pub (403 E. Hastings)… I get to play with a childhood musical hero of mine, pianist John Stetch!

Now, John isn’t that much older than I am but when I was 15 years old I bought his album Carpathian Blues (with Jorge Rossy, Gene Jackson, Jessy Murphy, Seamus Blake, Ugonna Okegwo) and was amazed by his masterful piano playing, lyrical improvising, and beautiful compositions. I heard that album and decided “I’m going to practice and practice until I’m good enough to get a call from John Stetch.

And WOW! Wouldn’t you know it? 20 years later, that day finally happened never came! Instead, I emailed John, after I found out he had a day off after his upcoming concert at The Cellar, and asked him to play an extra show with me and Joe Poole. And TA DA… he agreed.

So it’s going to be a trio show! We’ll be playing some of my tunes, some Gershwin and Jelly Roll Morton tunes, and a whole bunch of standards. At least, I think that’s what we’ll be playing. Since John won’t have much (if any) time to rehearse with us, it’s hard to say at this point what tunes we’ll do. Not exactly how I imagined our first meeting but hey, intimidating exciting nonetheless!

After all, this is jazz for cryin out loud. And what would this music be without the element of surprise?

With that in mind. I need to go practice a lot right now so that I can be ready for anything!

If you’d like to pre-order tickets for this Thursday, you can do so here.

Thanks for reading and have a great week!
